How often have you tried to figured out how to get buyers? Sometimes when we keep trying to get clients, or referrals, it doesn’t work consistently. Ever feel like pulling out your hair? I did for many years, until I just figured it out one day who my audience is. I created a few characteristics to my own list, when something happens that I like or don’t like I add it to my list.
As I was speaking to a friend of mine sometimes we don’t discover the right kind of customer for us when something isn’t happening fast enough for us or we aren’t making any money.
What can we do? Rather than to get frustrated with your results, stop trying to get customers. Start creating a web to attract them to you. How do you create a web? It’s this concept of giving, by creating evangelists who share your content, what you do and will support you. You create products and services to educate your prospects or invite them to watch a video to educate them. This will then draw customers to you rather than you chasing them. The Secret Is simply to give, provide educational material. The giving philosophy is pretty old. It’s been around for a few years, we have just forgotten about it.
You’ve heard of “Give and you shall receive.” Even in business this works. It’s like the law of attraction or reciprocity. The more you give the more you ought to get back.
Here’s an example of how this can work for you..
Wayne started a new job with a freight forwarding company in sales. He was given an account list to start with. After starting to call on these accounts some were really old and he would introduce himself to say “Hi, I am Wayne from XYZ company – I would like to tell you how we can save your money with your freight forwarding.” Over time, he got a lot of rejection so he was clearly getting frustrated with the list he had.
The list, could of been too old or customers were no longer in business or whatever reason they weren’t responding to Wayne and his solution for them. One day, he asked for help, and the solution was to create a e-book or paper of information, so he could give to his future suspects. He sat down and wrote out “20 Ways a Freight Company Could be Ripping You Off.” Then he started making calls. He’d give the client one or two ways they could be losing money on the phone. And then promised to give them the other 17 ways when he got the appointment. Now Wayne was in business..he started to get appointments.
At the appointment, he would give the suspect the booklet and asked permission to stay in touch with them via e-mail or reg mail. He kept sending helpful information. Some of the suspects turned into customers instantly, and others came along later.
Here’s another example, if you are an Artist..every time someone asks you for a quote or price of your art work – you would give them a paint brush kit or voucher of $25. absolutely free. Most of your art buyers never get gifts like this or better yet cross-promote with an art store or a framing shop. Your buyers likely have never gotten a gift like this before. One act of structured giving doesn’t cost very much – however you will have a buyer who will buy from you, just because you offered value to them. You could even create your own booklet to giveaway. “How to care for your art.” It’s the power of giving. Plain and simple. The more qualified your customer is the more likely your are going to convert them over to be your customer. Get them to opt-in to your newsletter.

I enjoyed this, Mari-Lyn. I think this is wonderful advice for artists. I've been thinking about what would be a good "gift" for signing up for my newsletter. Definitely the coupon is at the top of the list.

Thanks Ashish, thanks for the comment.
A good way of thinking about your place in the stream of commerce. What can you give that will be useful? Then, don't hesitate.
Hi Susan, thanks for dropping by..
I'm tryîng something new as well. I am an artist, a corporate trainer and coach and a gallery director in a French-speaking country. We are now offering a combination of an hour of Brush up your English discussion + a coffee or tea and a homemade cake for the cost of a coffee alone. I hope this will help people and bring a new clientèle at the same time by combining my professional skills and offering them for next to nothing. Anaïs
Thanks Anais, sometimes this is what we have to do. Try different things out.
